11th AUBC Unwraps November 18

The Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP), in partnership with the Asian University Basketball Federation (AUBF), will host the 11th Asian University Basketball Championship
 (AUBC).

 
The AUBC opening ceremony will be held on Monday November 18, 2019, at 10:00 in the morning, at the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) gymnasium in Intramuros, Manila. 
 
The AUBF was established in 1998 and it has since sanctioned all the AUBC competitions in the past.
 
The 11th AUBC tournament is being organized by the FESSAP. For the technical operations and the tournament proper, the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) has been tapped to coordinate with the FESSAP National Secretarait in the running of the games.
 
Six university basketballteams, including four foreign entries, are seeing action in the 11th AUBC tournament.
 
The foreign teams are Nippon Sport Science University (NSSU) and Kindai University from Japan, KLBA from Malaysia and HCMC from Vietnam.
 
Aside from the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) as the tournament host, one other local entry will be determined following the result of the 2nd Philippine University Basketball League (PUBL) that will be participated om by schools from the various league organizations affiliated with the FESSAP, thelone university sports association in the country recognized by the International University Sports Federation as a regular voting member since 2009.
 
The opening game of the 11th AUBC tournament on November 18 will feature Nippon Sport Science University (NSSU) of Japan against Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) following simple ceremonies to honor the special guests, the players and team officials and the traditional ceremonial toss to unwrap the prestigious competitions at 10:00.
 
Prominent personalities expected to attend the opening include FESSAP officials led by its president Angel Ngu, FESSAP Chairman Alvin Tai Lian, FESSAP Vice President Dr. Jesus Rodrigo Torres, and FESSAP Honorary President David Ong.
 
AUBF President Shin Dong Pa of Korea will be represented by Park Hyun Mo, AUBF Deputy Secretary General.
 
Invited Guest of Honors include Senator Emmanuel Pacquiao, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, and Presidential Adviser for Sports Dennis Uy.
 
The AUBC Organizing Committee is composed of Robert Milton A. Calo as OC  Chair, Executive Assistant Cecille Sarmiento, Antonio A. Quiza, and Fructuso Raytos, and Sean Elijah Siy.
 
League Commissioner is Leonardo B. Andres and Technical Supervisor is Nestor Macatuno. Host Lyceum represented by its athletic director, Herculles P. Callanta, assisted by LPU Gymnasium Manager, Lanie S. Buan.
 
Leonardo (Ding) Andres is also the Chair of the Laguna Colleges & Universities Athletic Association (LACUAA) and owner of the tournament’s patron, Andres and Fabella Trading Inc.
 
The 11th AUBC tournament will have a single-round format with the team having the best win-loss record bagging the title.

LAGUNA'S SANTA ROSA CITY TO HOST ASIAN UNIVERSITY CAGEFEST

For the first time in a decade, Santa Rosa city will co-host the side event of the 10th Asian University Basketball Championship (AUBC) from November 18 to 23. Official venue at San Andres Sports Complex in Manila.

Six collegiate teams, including a pair of foreign entries from the People’s Republic of China and Japan, are taking part in the prestigious regional competitions to be held at the tradition-steeped Santa Rosa Stadium and San Andres Sports Complex.

The local participants will be spearheaded by the top schools from the Laguna Colleges Universities Athletic Association (LACUAA) and other regional club.

A University of the People’s Republic of China and a University of Japan, both countries which had won  AUBC champions, will be around to test the mettle of the best collegiate squads from different regional collegiate from the North and South.

This was in cooperation with the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) in Laguna Provincial Chapter represented by  Leonardo Andres Sr. with the Asian University Basketball Federation (AUBF) Secretary-General Alvin Kwong and witnessed by BAP Board Secretary Ruel Roa Daba.

Brief history:
Muongji University of Korea topped the 4th AUBC tournament hosted by Dumaguete City in 2005. 

Huaqiao University, on the other hand, whipped local bet University of the Visayas (powered by a young Greg Slaughter) during the 6th AUBC finals held in Cebu City in 2008. An international school, Huaqiao is located in Xiamen, China and has been supportive of AUBF activities since 2005.

In 2011, Guangdong University of PROC bested a Taiwanese squad to annex the crown at the Bintulu Stadium in Sarawak, Malaysia.  The following year, the University of the East Red Warriors, led by Roi Sumang, Chris Javier and Cameroonian import Charles Mammie, ascended to the AUBC throne in hostilities held at the Trinity University of Asia in Quezon City and participated in by foreign schools Hangtuah University of Indonesia and Universiti Technologi MARI of Malaysia.

Honorable government officials from Laguna Provinces will be the guest speaker during the AUBC opening ceremony.
                                                              
Prominent sports personalities invited to grace the opening are Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) president Baldomero Estenzo, BAP president Prof. Robert Milton Calo, AUBF President Shin Dong Pa, AUBF secretary-general and deputy secretary general, Alvin Kwong and Park Hyun Mo, respectively, and LACUAA Chairman Leonardo Andres Sr.

All-time Korean cage great Shin Dong Pa and Park Hyun Mo will accompany the Muongji University team to Cebu City. Muongji, whose head coach is Kim Nam Ki, seeks to duplicate its championship finish nine years ago.

University of Visayas (uv) won the 65th National Students Basketball Championship in Bukidnon proivince, Southern Philippines

BUKIDNON, March 11, 2013 -  Cebu’s University of the Visayas  (UV) Green Lancers clobbered Jose Maria College (JMC) Kings of Davao City, 77-64, Sunday night to grab the title the 65th National Students Basketball Championship in Don Carlos Municipal, Bukidnon province. 
 

The CM Farm-UV Green Lancers trailed 32-30 at halftime but ran off 13 consecutive points at the start of the third quarter to go ahead, 43-42. 


The 2012 NSBC Defending Champion Jose Maria College Kings never recovered from the offensive onslaught and fell behind by as much as 21 points in the six-team tournament organized by the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) President Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and BAP region 10 officials led by Karl Fortich and Ruel Daba in coordination with municipality of Don Carlos Mayor Felix Manzano and his Vice Mayor Jude Palmada.

Burly Hernan Escosio, who earned top rookie and Most Valuable Player honors for the runner-up Lancers in the 2012  Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (CESAFI) competitions, knocked in 15 points and shifty playmaker John Michael Abad tallied 13 to thrill a capacity crowd of nearly 5,000 at the Josie Marie Zubiri Astrodome.   

UV’s 17 year old Cameroon recruits Nlzelssed and Akomo combined for 17 markers. JMC was led by Martinez and Bob Ombecan with 15 points each.  


Escosio and Abad were named co-MVPs of the tournament that included games being played in the towns of Dangcagan, Maramag and Quezon in this championship qualifying to the 10th Asian University Basketball Championship which will be held in September in Manila. 
 

The Championship is in cooperation with the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) and supported by AgriNurture Inc (ANI), San Miguel Corporation, Bestank, H2O Technologies Philippines, Healthy Options, and Cobra Energy Drink.   

Cagayan de Oro College took third place with a 95-73 rout of the University of Luzon Tigers from Dagupan City.

Cebu powerhouse University of the Visayas scored an emphatic 157-55 victory over host Philippine College Foundation (Valencia, Bukidnon) at the start of the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) - 65th National Student Basketball Championship in Don Carlos, Bukidnon province.
  
The Felix Belano-coached Green Lancers, who lost to the South Western University in the 2012 CESAFI finals, were bolstered by Cameroon recruits Nlzelsses and Babia, who tallied 35 and 17 points, respectively. Codilla also chipped in 17 markers.


Defending NSBC titlist Jose Maria College from Davao made short work of Pilgrim College of Cagayan De Oro city, 95-72, in the six-team tournament organized by the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) President Senator Antonio Trillanes and supported by Don Carlos, Bukidnon Mayor Felix Manzano and Vice Mayor Jude Palmada.

University of Luzon from Pangasinan split its two assignments. The Dagupan based team, which is supported by Dagupan City Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez and BAP region-1 Board Chair Jack Vidal, beat Philippine College of Foundation of Valencia, Bukidnon, 101-64, behind 15 points by Dennis Cuaresma and 13 each by Jeffrey Vitales and Kevin Sespene.

The champion of the 5th NSBC will qualify to the 10th Asian University Basketball Championship in September 2013 in Metro Manila hosted by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP), Asian University Basketball Federation (AUBF) and the BAP, with support from Agri Nurture Inc (ANI), Cobra Energy Drink, San Miguel Corporation, Bestank and Healthy Options.

Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia --- Guangdong University of China scored a masterful 95-66 victory over National Taiwan University of Arts in the finals of the 8th Asian University Basketball Championship held at the Binutlu Municipal Stadium in Sarawak, Malaysia.
 
With 6-foot-8 twins Ren Jun Fei and Ren Jun Wei, 6-9 Li Yuan Yu and 6-11 Da Lai Wu combining for 53 points, the Chinese totally dominated the Taiwanese from start to finish to capture the AUBC title once held by Hua Qiao University of China in 2007.   
 
Da Lai Wu, a native of Mongolia, and brothers Ren Jen Fei and Ren Jen Wei will see action in the 26th Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China in August where the Philippines is one of 24 participants in men’s basketball.

Taiwan was overwhelmed by China’s tremendous height advantage and was unable to keep pace with its opponents.  The Taiwanese were bannered by Lai Kuo Wei, who scored 21 points, and Hsiao Shun Yi, who added 19.
 
Meanwhile, the University of the East (UE) of the Philippines routed Malaysia, 85-67, to grab third place in the prestigious tournament held annually.
 
Paul Zamar topscored for the Philippines with 20 points, including a pair of three-point shots that allowed his team to pull away from the Malaysians, who had beaten the Filipinos in first-round action.

Three other players scored in double digits for the Jerry Codiñera-coached UE Red Warriors – Adrian Santos, 18,Benjamin Zosa, 11, and John Michael Noble, 10.



UE’s trip was made possible by the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP)and the Federation of School Sports Association (FESSAP), the latter of which is the local university sports body recognized by the Federation of International University Sports (FISU), the organizer of the Summer Universiade and World University Championship.
 
Attending the 8th AUBC closing ceremonies were AUBF and BAP secretary general Graham Chua Lim, who represented BAP President Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and AUBF president Shin Dong Pa of Korea, Malaysian Education Deputy Minister Dato' Saifuddin Bin Abdullah, Bintulu Basketball Association (BBA) chairman Wong Hong Gouk and  president Lawrence Hii, organizer Tan Kee Hian and Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) vice president Ling Kuok Kai.

The tournament was further boosted by the support of FIBA-Asia officials.

With the event's successful staging in Sarawak, Minister Bin Abdullah has already informed the Asian University Basketball Federation (AUBF) through secretary general Graham Chua Lim of Kuala Lumpur's intention to host the 9th AUBC competitions early next year.

Lyceum of the Philippines University won the AUBF-FESSAP Invitational
Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) added another title to its vast collection for many decade in basketball.

And this one comes against no less than an emerging Southeast Asian powerhouse, Vietnam team from Ho Chi Minh Basketball Federation (HCMBF).
              
Lyceum brought down Vietnam, 96-78, in their winner-take-all encounter to capture the title in the 2011 AUBF-FESSAP Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Lyceum gym in Intramuros, Manila over the weekend.
              
Shane Ko scattered 15 points to lead a balanced scoring attack by the Lyceum Pirates, who defeated the Vietnamese for the second time in as many meetings in this week-long competition organized by the Asian University Basketball Federation (AUBF) in cooperation with the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) and the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP).

Andro Laurel-Lopez received the championship trophy for Lyceum team in which tournament is supported by Star Paper Corporation, Healthy Options, Molten, Baker’s Fair and Universal Dragon Agriculture Seeds Corporation.

“We’re very happy to win this AUBF-FESSAP title, especially against a young and talented team from Vietnam. This is a good way to start the new year.” Said Coach Bonnie Tan.

Backing up Shane Ko were Allan Santos and Joseph Abaya, who added 14 points apiece, John Foronda with 13, Rich Guevarra with 11 and Arwin Azores 10.

Minh Trieu finished with 16 points for Vietnam, which earned the right to meet Lyceum in the finals by eliminating SCUAA champion Rizal Technological University, 105-102, last Friday.

This week-long tournament is a joint cooperation between AUBF President Shin Dong Pa of Korea and FESSAP President David Ong in preparation for a much bigger league to come in June 2011.

Start of the AUBF-FESSAP Invitational Basketball Tournament:


The AUBF-FESSAP Invitational Basketball Tournament will start on January 26, 2011 at Lyceum College in Manila.

This  was organized by the Asian University Basketball Federation (AUBF) and the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) in cooperation with the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) to handle the technical aspect of the tournament.

AUBF President Shin Dong Pa of Korea approved the participation of the Vietnam men team to play with our local collegiate teams invited by FESSAP President David Ong and FESSAP Executive Vice President Prof. Robert Milton Calo.

Four school men teams to participate in a one round elimination are Vietnam, Lyceum College, Rizal Technological University (RTU) and Asian Institute of Maritime School (AIMS).

Opening games to be played at Lyceum Gym start at 9:30 in the morning with AIMS plays against RTU coached by Coach Ruel Acot, followed by Lyceum of Coach Boni Tan tangle with visiting foreign team from Vietnam handled by a Filipino Coach Federico Samson at 11:00 a.m.

Simple ceremony with FESSAP President David Ong will toss the ceremonial game and will be assisted by Mr. Park Hyun Mo, representative of Mr. Shin Dong Pa. This tournament is supported by FESSAP in partners with Star Paper Corporation,
Healthy Options, Molten and Dragon Seeds Agricultural Corporation,

This tournament is in preparation to participate in the upcoming 26th Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China in August 2011 organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) which FESSAP is affiliated.

Vietnam delegation is headed by Miss Nga Do Thi Nguyet of Ho Chi Minh Basketball Federation, assistant Nguyen Van Tho, Coaching staffs Ly Vinh Khang, NguyenThien Son, Nguyen Thi Hurong, Cao Thi Thanh Thuy, FIBA Commissioner Nguyen Ngoc Tuan. The following players are Du Quoc Tai, Le Nguyen Khoi, Vu Tieu Bang, Trieu Han Minh, Nguyen Huynh Hai, Ngo Tuan Trung, Duong Vi Han, Jimmy Austria Herrera, and Charles Robinet.

Final is set on January 29, 2011 for a winner take all encounter for the top two teams after the elimination round.
